How to Downgrade iOS 4.1 to 4.0 on iPhone

We have already published guides on how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G & iPod Touch 2G (non-mc model). Now that you have already upgraded to iOS 4.1 only to find out Apple’s claim on fixing antenna issue is fake or aren’t impressed with iOS 4.1 beta then here is our working guide to downgrade iOS 4.1 to 4.0 on iPhone 3G, 3GS & iPhone 4.

But keep in mind that by downgrading iOS 4.1 to 4.0 your baseband won’t change and your iPhone will be locked if you are not on supported carrier. Hence unlockers must stay away from iOS 4.1 until iPhone dev team comes up with iOS 4.1 unlock tools.

Stuff you will need

1. iTunes 9.2 (latest iTunes)

2. Stock iOS 4.0 Firmware

3. iRecovery (Mac)

4. LibUSB Library Package (Mac)

5. iRrecovery & LibUSB Library Package (Windows)

Downgrade iOS  4.1 OS to 4.0 on iPhone 4, 3G & 3GS

1. Download iOS 4.0 firmware file.

2. Connect iPhone to computer

3. Now Start iTunes 9.2 and Windows (Alt Key+ Click Restore) Mac (Hold Option + Click Restore), Now manually select iOS 4.0 firmware.

4. During the restore process you will get an 1015 error. Don’t worry, that’s normal. Just click on Ok and close iTunes.

5. Now open terminal on Mac/ Command Prompt on Windows and type following commands

cd Desktop

. / iRecovery -s

setenv auto-boot true

saveenv

fsboot

exit

iRecovery
iRecovery Last Command fsboot

6. Now unplug your iPhone and turn it off by pressing the home+power button.

7. Once it is off, turn it on by pressing the power button. Plug-in your iPhone and load iTunes to continue with the activation.

That’s it we have successfully downgraded iOS 4.1 to 4.0 on iPhone. iPhone 3GS users can only downgrade to firmware 4.0, unless you saved your ECID files to a earlier version.

    Using command prompt doesn’t seem to work for me when i type in iRecovery. It just says iPhone not found. And I have to type in ‘iRecovery -s’ instead of ‘./iRecovery -s’ or nothing happens at all, it’s just invalid. Also, Alt key + Restore does not manually open up restore, i have to press shift + restore.

    Hi, i have an iPhone 3G. I did the whole process, including the DFU mode. But in step 7 iTunes show me the same error “this device isn’t eligible for the requested operation”. I’m using iTunes 10. Can somebody help me? Thanks.

    Hi, Ihad the same problem on Win 7. Just reboot and go to last good configuration. After puting devide in to DFU I got the msg: Got USB No Iphone.Ipod found. Anyone any ideas?

    I got it to work by puting the installer in compatybility mode with WIN XP (SP3). Does the job! Thanks

    It worked for me, but I had to:

    -get rid of the spaces in . / iRecovery -s
    (write ./iRecovery -s)

    -dubbelclick the libusb2 package and install before typing the terminal commands

    Ok I got all the way to error 1015 and then rebooted it, it’s asking me for a at&t sim card to activate it, but when I put one in it didn’t recognize it and the background is the screen that the recovery mode shows. What do I do?

    That happened to me and I had to recover it to the latest firmware. That fixed that problem.. But becareful if you are trying to unlock a 3gs, there is no unlock for 4.1 yet.

    I can’t get through with this. If put in DFU mode, my computer doesn’t even recognize my iphone, if put in recovery mode, the phone just restars after I’ve gone through installing the old firmware, so I don’t get the chance to get it out of R mode with Irecovery or recboot. And as said, in dfu mode, it does not recognize the iphone.
