A report originating from GigaOM claims Apple is currently working on a universal iPhone SIM card that would allow them to go around the carriers and sell all future iPhones direct through Apple Retail locations and their online store.
According to GigaOM, the universal SIM card would only be for the Europoean market at first. This would allow customers to keep the same SIM card no matter what carrier they are on. Unfortunately, a model like this currently wouldn’t work in the US, with AT&T having exclusive rights to the iPhone. However, as Gizmodo speculates, this could all change when the transition to 4G takes place.
