A mere 5 weeks after the DROID 2 was released into the world, word came down that it was going to be discontinued and replaced by the DROID 2 Global. Now, 5 weeks after that those reports surfaced we are really seeing the DROID 2 being laid to rest. Even in today’s age of fast paced technology, a two month life span for a device is really, really short.
Honestly nobody was really that surprised when a leaked screenshot from a Best Buy inventory computer shows the status of the DROID 2 as “Discontinued.” Taking its place, according to the Best Buy computer, is the big brother, the DROID 2 Global.
The DROID 2’s release came shortly after the hyped DROID X. With nothing new to offer over the DX, the DROID 2 never really stood a chance. But the new DROID 2 Global is rumored to have a beefed up 1.2GHz processor and will be offered in either a glossy black or blue and a shiny white.
Best Buy along with other Verizon retailers, are preparing for the November 11th launch of the DROID 2 Global. That day also has the potential for a few other big device launches, including the DROID Pro.
EDIT: I figure I would check into this a bit, so I went to my local Best Buy today (Sunday) I asked to see the original DROID 2, but the BB employee said she was all out of the DROID 2. Logically I asked when there would be more in stock and she said “there will a a new DROID something worldwide coming soon, I don’t think we can re-order the DROID 2 anymore.”
UPDATE: Droid-Life is again reporting the validity of the new DROID 2 Global coming in two colors. In the original leaked screenshot, there were two SKUs for the new DROID 2 Global. There were the obvious theories about what that could mean, the most popular being a model with a camera, and one without a camera. But today’s uncovered screenshot of a Costco computer again shows two SKUs, but with added abbreviations. A “BL” and “WH” appear in the listing. It could quite possibly stand for blue or black and white. We’ll know for sure very soon, stay tuned!
