As the Facebook Mobile Event is just finishing up, it’s safe to say that there will be no Facebook phone. We have heard the rumors now for the last few weeks about this secret Facebook phone, as of now and probably for the near future, there will be no Facebook phone. Enough said on that.
Instead Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg and his team announced a new universal Facebook mobile platform. Until now there was no unified version of Facebook’s mobile site. Each platform basically had it’s own version of Facebook mobile. That really wasn’t practical in the eyes of Facebook.
The challenge for Facebook was to simplify and connect the 200 million mobile users who connect to Facebook on a daily basis. The new mobile platform consists of a single, universal sign-on feature. They also introduced a new API and a set of tools that will hopefully allow developers to create better applications. Other feature of the new platform include Location APIs, and Deals.
So there is no phone, but the other rumors floating around, were a possible Facebook iPad app. This was actually a shocker, Zuckerburg said snidely “the iPad’s not mobile… it’s a computer.” He quickly went on to clarify that he wasn’t being rude towards Apple or Apple’s iPad, he just felt the iPad wasn’t a true mobile device, and therefore we will not be getting a new iPad Facebook app.
Since we are on the subject of mobile apps, they did say that there is a new Facebook app available for Android devices. Erick Tseng head of the Facebook Mobile division, says the new app is available for download now on the Android Market.
