The history repeats itself. Mosaic became one of the first web browsers on the Internet. Netscape replaced it. Internet Explorer brought it down by shipping with Windows. Then Mozilla foundation rose up and created Mozilla Firefox browser and the rest is history.
Firefox browser celebrates its birthday on 9th November 2010 as exactly on this day in 2004 it was announced. It is really hard for me to remember a single person I know who did not switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox in the very first days of it’s glory in 2004-05. In less than half the time of Internet Explorer, Firefox has become one of the most important Open Source project. The success of Firefox as a browser lies in the fact that it has strike a correct balance between providing its users a more secure, faster, stable experience and ensuring adoption of common web standards.
The advent of Firefox literally changed the way we access Internet and websites. It made the Web more open. To this day, inspite of exotic options available (read Google Chrome), Firefox browser still holds 30% of browser market share.
The fact is known that many users are switching over to Google Chrome for more speed (and more stability? really?), but Firefox would always be the milestone that paved the way and standards for Web browsers of future to come. Extensions, tabbed browsing, better bookmarks and sync, themes.. these became synonymous with Web browsers, all thanks to Firefox. Happy 6th Birthday Firefox ! May you live long and continue to evolve the Web.
