Microsoft has announced that starting today, Hotmail users can enable full session HTTPS encryption, to take full advantage of the security measure. You should not confuse over it, as previously SSL in Hotmail was only allowed at the time of sign-in, but now it is available from the start upto the time you log off.
To enable full session HTTPS for Hotmail, you can login via https://hotmail.com/ or better you can set it as the default email, calendar and contacts at https://account.live.com/ManageSSL. Hotmail is not the only service from Microsoft to go HTTPS encryted today. From today SkyDrive, Photos, Docs, and Devices pages will all automatically use SSL security.
The announcement of the added security measure is good, but it has an underlying catch. Enabling HTTPS will render Outlook Hotmail Connector, Windows Live Mail, and the Windows Live application for Windows Mobile (version 6.5 and earlier) and Symbian application unusable.
