Looks like Dell is trying something new here in the United States. Today Dell has begun to sell an unlocked version of their Android powered tablet, the Dell Streak. Not only is the unit unlocked, but it is being sold with the upgraded Android 2.2. All of this is available right out of the box from Dell.
The new version can now work on any GSM network, like T-Mobile, and is the first version of the Streak to ship with the updated Android 2.2. The great thing about that is you get all the great Froyo features that makes this device a whole lot more desirable. You’ll have mobile hotspot capabilities, Adobe Flash and full multi-touch in almost all major applications.
Unlocked devices seem to be a regular thing in Europe and other parts of the world, but here in the States, we don’t usually see unlocked deals or offers. Since the Nexus One debacle, no major manufacturer or carrier has attempted to push a major smartphone or tablet at a unlocked or unsubsidized price. Even the new Samsung Galaxy Tab is really only available with a contract from any one of the four major carriers. Looks like Dell is going to take a chance.
If this sounds tempting to you, then you can head over to Dell and order yourself up one of these bad boys. There is a bit of a premium for the unlocked version, it now costs $579. It is also only available in black, but I dont see that being much of an issue for anyone.
Update: According to BGR, it is also available in cherry red and white.
