For a long time there has been an abundance of local radio station apps that provide streaming access to a single station. These are typically only downloaded by a small number of local users that listen to that particular station, and apparently have been deemed “spam” by Apple.
President of DJ Radio Apps Jim Barcus asked Apple why 10 of his radio apps had been rejected from the App Store and received the following response,
“Single station app are the same as a FART app and represent spam in the iTunes store…[Apple] will no longer approve any more radio station apps unless there are hundreds of stations on the same app.”
While this is most likely not a big deal to the majority of users with a number of radio apps providing hundreds of local and internet stations from within one single app, it represents a larger issue surrounding Apple’s App Store approval process. There’s no word on whether or not Apple will be removing the hundreds of single station apps currently available on the App Store.
