Unfortunately this one is only for US users. However, if you are in the US and have been searching high and low for a free turn-by-turn GPS app, Navfree USA might be just what you’re looking for.
Most free turn-by-turn GPS apps require a monthly subscription fee in order to provide access to the satellite-based databases such as TeleAtlas that are necessary for providing accurate directions. However, the Navfree USA app is able to avoid these fees by utilizing a user-editable wiki style map system known as OpenStreetMap. Users can even contribute from within the app by sending error reports.
The app seems to be the only decent free turn-by-turn solution and provides the majority of features you’d expect with similar paid apps. Some of the features include 3D and 2D views, detour support, easy map navigation with zooming and routing, live route previews, and navigation for pedestrians.
The app is currently only available for USA users, but the developer Navmii is working on creating versions for other countries. There will also be in-app purchases added in the near future that will bring the ability to upgrade to TeleAtlas maps, and receive traffic information and safety camera data.
You can download Navfree USA from the App Store now. Requires iOS 4.0 or higher.
