To try the feature for yourself and in your language you can head over here. As quoted on the Google Docs blog:
We’ve gotten a lot of feedback on this feature, and one of the biggest requests was to add support for additional languages. Today, we’re happy to announce that we’ve added support for 29 additional character sets, including those used in most European languages, Russian, Chinese Simplified and some other Asian languages.
As pointed out on the blog, for the best results high-resolution images or PDFs are recommended. There has also been improvements in importing formatting from documents and preserving font and alignment information.
According to the blog post, future enhancement to the service will be in areas of adding support for more languages and speed and accuracy as well.
