In a strategic move to beef up its revenues before the pre-announced IPO, Skype has introduced a new feature in its desktop client software, in-app advertising. As a precautionary measure, Skype is taking this slow and rolling it slowly in selected countries and making it as less obstructive as possible.
In the coming days, users in many countries will start seeing ads in their Skype Home tab occasionally. This feature has not come as a total surprise, Skype had been testing this for quite sometime in past now. The final changes to the test are now being rolled out to countries which include US, UK and Germany, in the initial phase.
Ads support for Skype will eventually be rolled out in other countries as well, but for now these are the markets of focus for Skype. Even int he countries where it is being rolled out, the introduction will be gradual.
Business strategy for revenues being important, yet Skype is being cautious about introducing these ads as it may lead to huge user outrage. Skype says that it plans to show ads from only one brand a day. Also these ads will only load on some occasions. Also no plans to experiment with other locations in software, ads will only appear on Home tab for now. We have to wait and watch to see how this move plays up for Skype.
