According to a senior executive at Sony Pictures, the film studio is tagged on looking into a web distribution deal, similar to the one announced yesterday by Warner Bros. The rival’s home entertainment division revealed that it would start renting movies via Facebook, making a debut with “Batman: The Dark Knight”. This is first such attempt by a major media company to test the social network’s potential.
At a Media Summit Conference in New York, John Calkins, Executive Vice President Sony Pictures Digital Division told that this move through Facebook is a “great first step” in testing the ability of social networks to sell films.
Our view is that Facebook is certainly a viable pool for people interested in media content. If you can have fans do the marketing, that’s a great idea…we’re looking at things like that.
Although the idea to sell movies online using the social network is really “5 Star”, wonder why this method wasn’t tried earlier. Facebook caters to almost 600 million monthly users worldwide, and the is surely to make wonders for both.
