Linux Kernel based open source Android mobile operating system gives enough power to hackers to overclock, root or modify android based handsets like Google Nexus One which was overclocked from 1 Ghz to 1.5Ghz. However other smartphones based on proprietary operating system like PalmPre which is based on webOS are difficult to modify but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
Here is first achievement from WebOS hackers unixpsyco & caj2008 of Precentral forums, along with others, has been able to modify the processor speed (overclock) on current Palm Pre and has managed to take the processor from 500 Mhz to 800 Mhz.
This is definitely going to be geeky for some Palm pre users only if you are not on webOS 1.4. The modified custom kernel to overclock palm pre is available for OS 1.3.5.1 only. Installation is quite simple as running scripts on your Palm Pre. As of now there two version of OS 1.3.5.1 optimized kernels available one with 700Mhz and another with 800Mhz.

If you plan to overclock Palm Pre then you must know overclocking side effects, reduced battery life and increased pocket warmth, occasional freezing.
Now even after knowing overclocking side effects if you still want to overclock your pre then head over to precental forums for complete step by step instructions on how to install OS 1.3.5.1 with optimized kernel with speed 700Mhz & 800Mhz (via Engadget).
