We have kept you updated on all of the news surrounding developer Valve bringing popular game distribution platform Steam to Mac OS X. We reported on the original teaser images that hinted at the possibly of Steam coming to Mac, followed by the official announcement, then much news of popular Valve titles such as Left 4 Dead 2 becoming cross-platform compatible. If you remember, we also let you know about the beta sign-up for the inevitable Steam for Mac beta. Well today we are finally getting our first look at Steam for Mac via the demo video embedded below.
While this first look at Steam on Mac OS X doesn’t tell us all that much, its quite obvious Steam isn’t changing that much for the Mac version with the overall look and feel of the UI being quite similar to Steam on Windows. Personally I feel like there could have been a better effort to make the UI feel a little bit more at home on the Mac, but its great to see Apple finally starting to get some attention from game developers, publishers, and distributors.
Valve’s highly anticipated Portal 2 is supposed to be the first game released for both Windows and Mac simultaneously and is expected sometime this “Holiday season”. This is what Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead, had to say about the experience of building the game for both platforms,
“Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step….”
“We’re always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.”
