Verizon looks like they got the formula down pat, with the Motorola Droid finally getting Android 2.1 a few weeks ago, Verizon is well on their way to being the first carrier to get first generation phones up and running with Android 2.1. Verizon has updated the Droid Eris support page to show that a update for the Eris is “Coming Soon”. Of course it will have HTC’s SenseUI running on top. Now that’s as much as Verizon is willing to say at moment, but it could also mean that update could come at anytime. They also don’t exactly mention anywhere on the page, “Android 2.1,” but if you review the list of features that the update brings, there is no way that the update could be anything but Android 2.1. Some of those features are as followed:
To me the 3D Gallery is the dead giveaway, it’s one of the main features of Android 2.1. The update will also bring some performance improvements and carrier specific add-ons. The only other thing I’m hearing is that the update will be mandatory. It will be coming as a OTA (over-the-air) update, all Eris owners will get a update notification, and be required to update the device. The update will also require a full wipe of your device.
With jump from 1.5 to 2.1, it’s more than necessary to require a full wipe. So all Eris owners should back up any important SMS, call logs, or anything that you want to save. Also means that you will have to re-install all Market apps ( paid apps can be automatically downloaded the next time you log-in to the Android Market).
Droid Eris owners be on the lookout, this is a definitely a little more concrete than some of the other Android 2.1 update rumors floating around. It doesn’t look the Eris is dead yet!
